About 8 miles out that road, there’s a cutoff to the right (Iron Springs Rd) that will take you to a site with five huge open pit iron mines. State Road 56 heading west from Cedar City is the gateway to it all. And that is part of the problem for tourists wanting to find the ruins it’s spread out over probably 20 miles. Used to be old cars, barns, houses, etc all over the area. Fifty years ago, there was much more evidence of a past civilization out here, but souvenir hunters, vandals and thieves have picked it pretty clean (like a lot of places in southern Utah). The iron mining boom went bust for various reasons, and Ironton sort of faded away. It’s now a ghost town, but once 30,000 people lived there - and it was, by far, the largest town in southern Utah. Other efforts to revive it over the years have come and gone.
